April Fools’ Day: For People Who Need to Laugh

April Fools’ Day may not be considered as an official holiday in any country, but it is celebrated with fun and excitement in most parts of the world. This day is filled with people playing practical jokes and pranks on one another. The type of prank depends on each country and tradition, but the result is always the same, to fool someone. However, very few people have clear knowledge about the reasons behind the celebration of fools’ day on the first day of April.

History of the Day

There have been many versions about the origin of April Fools’ Day. Some say that it was the change in the calendar system by King Charles of France. In 1952 King Charles announced the introduction of Gregorian calendar. According to the Gregorian calendar, the New Year celebrations were held from March 25th to April 1st. People who did not follow the change were called fools and hence the name “April Fools”. Others believe that this day came from the traditional Nun’s Priest’s tale in Canterbury Tales on March 32nd.

Known Pranks

Radio stations, TV channels, magazines, newspapers, game shows and even websites may play a prank on you on this day. Even sites like Google have played pranks on April Fools day in an attempt to fool all the visitors to their website. Sometimes, radio stations and TV channels broadcast false news that could upset people. Even news such as the assassination of Bill Gates was once announced by Korean and American websites and was later updated as an ‘April Fools’ prank.

Superstitions

Even April Fools’ Day is not relieved from the clutches of superstitions. It is often said that a man should not ever get married on the first day of April. The common belief is that if a person gets married on April 1st, he will be bossed around by his wife throughout his life.

April Fools is one of the days when all of us want to laugh heartily. The day should end with a smile on your face, not with tears. So play it safe with responsible pranks and celebrate the day in good fun.
